What's High Definition TV?
High Definition television, or HDTV, has been in the news for the last couple of years and on the back of it lots of shiny new TV’s have been sold but what is HDTV? And how Does it affect you?
High Definition basically refers to any TV signal that is transmitted with more than the normal picture resolution of a standard telly. As a result you need a television capable of showing the increased picture resolution. Thats Where HD-Ready TV’s come in. An HD-ready TV sadly won’t turn a non-HD programme into an HD one, and likewise you can’t watch HD programs on a standard TV.
At the moment in the UK both the satellite broadcaster Sky and cable channel Virgin media operate HDTV channels. In addition the BBC are due to launch Freesat, a new satellite TV service in 2008 which will host free high definition TV channels…you will need a satellite dish and set top box though.
